New features in RefWorks!

RefWorks has released some new (and nice) features. This is a selection of the changes:

You can drag a single reference or group of references into folders – click on the grey bar just above the reference summary then drag it to the folder or function on the Quick Access bar
In the Organize & Share Folders area, you can now easily share a folder or your entire RefWorks database with over 300 social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.
The Import Results page now includes Duplicate Checking Options. You’ll see them when you are importing references via direct export from a data vendor or uploading a tagged file from an online catalog.
Various sections of the Quick Access bar are collapsible.
The Add New Reference page has been streamlined – all the same fields and functions are there, the order they are listed in is just slightly modified.

Google Books & RefWorks

When you find a book in Google Books you can import the bibliographical information to RefWorks (RefGrab-it could also be used, but our experience is that it’s not always working).

Click the link ‘About this book’ and scroll down to the end of the page, there you’ll find the section ‘Bibliographic information’. There are three buttons behind ‘Export Citation’:

We think that the RefMan option gives the most complete information – but be aware that the place of publication is not available, you have to add it yourself. Click the RefMan button and save the RIS-file.

In RefWorks:

Click in the grey bar at the top of the page References
Choose Import
Select behind Import Filter/Data Source: RIS format
Select behind Database: Reference Manager
Use Browse to upload the saved RIS-file
If applicable: choose behind Import Into Folder the folder you want to put the reference in
Click the button Import
The reference will be available in the Last Imported Folder
To add the place of publication, click Edit (the icon looks like a sheet with a pencil)
Scroll down a bit until you find the field Place of Publication and enter the place
Click the button Save Reference to save the change

Deduplicating references in RefWorks

In RefWorks you can search for duplicate references in your account: Go to View and click Duplicates, then you can choose between Excact duplicates and Close duplicates.

By default, the most recent added reference is marked by RefWorks, so if you hit the delete button these references are deleted from your account. However, the most recent added reference is not necessarily the most complete reference, it might have an abstract that the older reference hasn’t, or it might have an attachment etc. So that’s not automatically the reference you want to delete!

There is a small solution for this: under Customize you find the option ‘Automatically Mark Duplicates’. By default that’s a Yes, but you can choose to change that into No. It means you have to mark the references you want to delete manually, but at least yóu choose what to delete.

Problem with favorite output styles

It can be very useful to add output styles you expect to use frequently to the list of favorites in the Output Style Manager. When it’s a favorite, you can easily select it when you manually add a new reference to your account or when you want to create a stand-alone bibliography – you don’t have to scroll down the complete list of output styles. To use a style in Write-n-Cite this style has to be in your favorites list.

At this moment there is a small problem with the favorite output styles: you can’t have just one favorite. If you select only one style, RefWorks doesn’t remember it. When you add more than one style, it works fine. By default, RefWorks has pre-selected the most used styles, like APA and Chicago. When you add a style there won’t be a problem. But if you decide to clean the list of favorites, be aware that you have to select at least two favorites.

You can find the Output Style Manager under the link Bibliography: select the output style you want to add as a favorite and use the green arrow to copy the style to the favorites box.

RefWorks has opened its own YouTube channel, the ProQuest RefWorks Channel. It offers short videos showing you for example how to use Write-n-Cite or how to share customized output styles. You can find the videos here:

Exporting references from ProQuest

When you export references from one of the ProQuest-databases – Sociological Abstracts, ABI Inform, EconLit, ERIC – be aware that you have to edit this information:

The publication year is imported twice
Behind other pages – where the last page of the article should be entered – the complete page range is entered (including the start page). This gives strange results in your reference list.

ProQuest and RefWorks are aware of this problem and are working on a solution, but they can’t give a specific timeline.

Problems using RefWorks 2.0 in Internet Explorer 9

The combination RefWorks 2.0 and Internet Explorer 9 isn’t a very lucky one. A lot of functions work normally, but the Edit function doesn’t – which for example means you can’t change the title of a reference.

This is the solution: Close the Edit screen. Next to the URL at the top of the screen you have to click the Compatibility View button – that will solve the problem. The button looks like a broken square. When you open Edit again, you can put the cursor in the title field again and make changes.

How can I make a subfolder from an existing folder?

A new feature in RefWorks 2.0 is the possibility to create subfolders – folders within a folder. When you already have created folders, you can change them into subfolders afterwards.

When your parent folder doesn’t exist yet, you first have to create a new folder, by using the button New Folder
Go to the tab Organize and Share Folders
Click the folder button behind the folder you want to become a subfolder
Choose Rename Folder
In the light box, click the link Create Subfolder
In the new box you can choose the parent folder from the drop down menu
Click the button Rename

New features available in RefWorks 2.0!

RefWorks has made some enhancements to RefWorks 2.0:

You can create subfolders – folders within folders!

You can deduplicate within a single folder instead of your complete RefWorks-account.
The tabs Folders & Share have been combined into one tab: Organize & Share Folders.

RefWorks 2.0 is available for EUR-users: you can switch to RefWorks 2.0 by clicking the link at the top of the screen. You can switch back to RefWorks Classic until the end of 2011.

Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde als Output Style toegevoegd aan RefWorks

De output stijl van het Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde is toegevoegd aan RefWorks. U kunt deze stijl selecteren bij het maken van een ‘losse’ literatuurlijst en bij het maken van verwijzingen in een tekst met behulp van Write-n-Cite. Om de stijl te zien in Write-n-Cite dient u wel eerst de stijl toe te voegen aan uw Favorites:

Klik in uw RefWorks-account op Bibliography
Kies Output Style Manager
Zoek Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde op in de linkerlijst
Selecteer Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde
Klik op de groene pijl die naar rechts wijst
Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde is deel van de lijst van favorites
