Great news! From now we, as an ‘academic customer’, have access to the RefWorks alumni program. This means that when you leave the Erasmus University, you will be able to access your RefWorks-account as long as we have a RefWorks-subscription.
You can change “Type of User” to “Alumni” in your account settings, by going to Tools > Update User Information.

Maybe you’ve already noticed: the opportunity to import references from Google Scholar to RefWorks has disappeared mysteriously. There should be a link next to each article, but it isn’t there anymore, although you still can select this option in the Scholar Preferences. The world-wide RefWorks community has asked Google Scholar what has happened, but we are still waiting for their answer.
In the meantime: you can use the BibTex, EndNote or Reference Manager option. I’ve tested it and the imported information is the same. Click on the link under the article and save the file (.bib, . enw. or .ris). You can import this file into your RefWorks-account, but make sure you select the correct Import Filter:
| File |
Import Filter |
Database |
| BibTex (.bib) |
BibTex |
Bibdesk |
| EndNote (.enw) |
EndNote View |
EndNote View |
| Reference Manager (.ris) |
RIS Format |
Reference Manager |
When you have a list of articles this is time-consuming. You can make one big file by opening the small files with NotePad and copy past the information into one file. You can upload this big file and import all titles at once.

RefGrab-It is an optional feature for capturing bibliographic information from web pages. It is available in two versions — a bookmarklet that works with either Internet Explorer or Firefox and downloadable plug-ins for Internet Explorer and Firefox. The plug-in version has some features that are not available in the bookmarklet version.
RefGrab-It looks for information on web pages and if an ISBN number, PubMed ID or DOI exists on the web page, RefGrab-It will automatically search various web resources to get supplemental information that may be of interest to you. RefWorks may also locate RSS feeds related to that web page.
More information and the installation files are available on this page: http://www.refworks.com/refgrabit/linkpage.aspx
You can also enroll for the RefGrab-it webinar at http://www.refworks.com/content/webinars/default.asp#RefGrab-It.

In April, RefWorks has released a feature upgrade to the program. The most important changes are:
- Folder creating change: After creating a new folder, you will now be returned to whatever page you were on before the folder was created, as opposed to remaining on the Create New Folder page. This enhancement makes it easier to get back to what you were originally working on prior to creating a folder.
- Ability to Include OpenURL Links in Bibliographies: RefWorks has added a new capability that allows any output style to be configured to include dynamically created OpenURL links in bibliography formatting. This new option is available within the Output Style Editor. You will now find an Add OpenURL Link to Output option listed in the Fields for this Type column. Simply add this field to any defined reference type (like you would with any other field) and when you format a paper, the OpenURL link (based on your Organization’s OpenURL definition) is automatically created and inserted with the bibliography. For the EUR this is 360Link.

RefShare users now have the option to include OCLC’s WorldCat OpenURL Gateway in a shared folder or database, instead of the EUR Link Resolver (360 Link).
This is very useful when you share your folders or database with RefWorks users from other universities, because this allows these users direct access to full-text articles and other online resources available from their library if their organization participates in the WorldCat Registry.
To find out which organizations participate, visit http://www.worldcat.org/registry/institutions

During the week of January 12th, 2009, RefWorks is scheduled to release another feature upgrade to the program. Detailed information about the new features and enhancements for the January release is available at:
http://info.csa.com/refworks/feature-release/january2009.shtml.
One of the announced enhancements was file attachments searching, but this is the latest news from RefWorks:
“We regret to report that the new feature allowing users to search their attachments did not meet our stringent performance standards. The results of this discovery has resulted in the withdrawal of the attachments searching feature from this release. We are currently investigating the feasibility of this feature for a future release.”
An important enhancement for Dutch names: RefWorks has corrected an issue with multi-word last names (ex. Van de Walle) alphabetizing correctly in bibliographies.
