RSS feeds in RefWorks

June 26, 2008

One way of importing references into your RefWorks account that’s not covered in the RefWorks module on the website of the University Library is using RSS Feeds. RefWorks has integrated a RSS Feed Reader, so you can add RSS Feeds from publishers and websites, view the information and import the data into your RefWorks database. With a RSS feed you can save your search and re-run this search from within RefWorks.

Perform a search in for example PubMed, Business Source Premier, Science Direct and ABI/Inform Global. These databases have an option to create a RSS Feed. Click on this option and copy the link on your screen.

Open your RefWorks account and choose Search and RSS Feed. Past your URL in the bar behind ‘RSS Feed URL’ and click ‘Add RSS Feed’. Click Edit if you want to change the name and description. If you want to re-run your search, just click on the URL of the RSS Feed. You will get a list of references. To import these references, mark the titles and click Import on the top of the page.

The quality of the results are different for each database: a RSS Feed from PubMed gives correct results, but if you import the results from Business Source Premier into RefWorks, they are definitely not correct. In that case: click on the link behind URL and you’ll be guided back to the reference in the database. From there you can export the reference into RefWorks.
